I tried to do it with GetRight, but that program can only process up to 500 links in a web page, this archive had well over one thousand. At the same time, I learned that Tcl could download files, so I thought "How hard can it be to make my own program?" So here is my little effort. It is supposed to download complete Web sites. You give it an URL, and down it goes on, happily downloading every linked URL in that site. While it goes, it changes the original pages, all the links get changed to relative links. so that you can surf the site in your hard disk without those pesky absolute links. <h2>What this program is not</h2> A <a href="tcl:Ayuda::InvokeBrowser http://www.getright.com">GetRight</a> substitute, I have seen in Usenet that some people seem to think so, while I get a big ego boost from reading it, the fact remains it isn't. <h2>What this program has not</h2> A capital 'L', believe me, one capital per word is good enough for me. <h2>What this program lacks</h2> Getleft doesn't support Java, Javascript, ... It only understands plain Html. <h2>Getleft at SourceForge</h2> You can also check <a href="tcl:Ayuda::InvokeBrowser http://sourceforge.net/projects/getleftdown/">Getleft's page at SourceForge</a>, at the moment there is nothing much to see there, but you can already file bug reports, request support, suggest new features, ... You can also subscribe to the <a href="tcl:Ayuda::InvokeBrowser http://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/getleftdown-user">mailing list</a> they provide for Getleft. <h2>Features</h2> <ul> <li>While it goes, it changes the original pages, all the links get changed to relative links, so that you can surf the site in your hard disk without those pesky absolute links. <li>Limited Ftp support, it will download the files but not recursively. <li>Resumes downloading if interrupted. <li>Filters not to download certain kind of files. <li>You can get a site map before downloading. <li>Getleft can follow links to external sites. <li>Multilingual support, at present Getleft supports traditional Chinese, Dutch, English, Esperanto, German, French, Italian, Polish, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Turkish and Spanish. If you would like Getleft to support your own language, please check <a href=translate>this</a>. <li>Some others not worth mentioning. </ul> <h2>License</h2> Getleft is licensed under the terms of the GPL version 2. Let my first word to you be: THANKS! or to put it in another way: Danke, merci, grace, obrigado, donkey shane, Mare-See, Key toss, M'goy, Graht-see-eh, Arigato, Spaciba, Gathee-oss, Tok,..., whatever suits you. Translating the program is not hard, just boring, this is what you have to do: Check that you have the latest version of Getleft, if you don't, the newest labels won't get translated, you can look it up <a href="tcl:Ayuda::InvokeBrowser http://personal1.iddeo.es/andresgarci/getleft/english/download.html"> at my web page</a>. Check on of the 'menus' files in the archive, you can use whichever you want, but if you are reading this, the English one, menus.en, is probably your best choice. Translate all entries, this is the boring part, and the reason I thank you so much. The '&' symbols are used to indicated Getleft where to underscore the menu entries, please use them only in the menu section. For example, if you want the 'F' in the 'File' menu entry to be underscore, you have to write: '&File'. Save this file with the name 'menus.xx', change the 'xx' to the two letter code that identifies your language, 'it' for Italian, 'de' for German,... After doing this, check the 'supported' file and add an entry for your translation, for example, if you are doing a German translation add: de Deutsch iso8859-1 The first column is the two letter code, the same you have just used to name the menus file. The second is the name of the language. The third is the encoding used for the fonts needed in that language. Now launch Getleft, and you should see the entry for your language in the 'Tools' menu. Try it, check that the underscores are where they should, that the spelling is good,... and send both files to me. If possible compress the files before attaching them to mail, that way we won't lose any non-ascii characters. I'll will include all translations with the next release and gobble all the merit (Isn't free software great?) Okay, okay. Put your name and e-mail in the Copyright section of the file menus you have created, and I will put you in the History file and in the credits. .topic install .title Installing Getleft <img src=logo> <h2>Requirements</h2> Getleft works on Linux, I guess Unix variants will be fine, and Windows. Considering the Mac OS X is something like Unix and that there are Tcl/Tk and cURL versions for it, Getleft might work there, I don't have access to any Mac machines though, so I would be very grateful for any reports about it. <h2>Windows</h2> Windows users have two options to install Getleft: <ul> <li>If you already have Tcl/Tk 8.1 or newer installed. <li>If you do not, and if you don't know, it means you don't. </ul> In both cases, the procedure is similar, you <a href="tcl:Ayuda::InvokeBrowser http://personal1.iddeo.es/andresgarci/getleft/english/download.html">download</a> the appropiate getleft-setup-v1.1.exe, with or without Tcl/Tk, and double click on it to begin the install. <h3>Windows 95</h3> Getleft doesn't work out of the box in Windows 95, you will need two things: <ul> <li>msvcrt.dll: But if you have been using Win95 for some time you are likely to have it already. <li>Winsock version 2: If Getleft tells you that the program cURL doesn't work, you need to download the winsock library, you can find it <a href="tcl:Ayuda::InvokeBrowser http://www.microsoft.com/windows95/downloads/contents/wuadmintools/s_wunetworkingtools/w95sockets2/default.asp">here</a>. </ul> <h2>Unix/Linux</h2> <h3>Tcl/Tk</h3> Getleft is written in Tcl/Tk, an interpreted language created by John Ousterhout. Getleft needs Tcl/Tk 8.1 or newer. It will, most definitely, not work with earlier versions. In Linux you can get the version you have got by doing: <pre> $ wish % puts $tcl_version </pre> It may happen, specially if you are using Red Hat, that you don't have wish. You can know by doing: <pre> $ rpm -qa | grep tcl $ rpm -qa | grep tk </pre> If one or both are missing you will have to install them, don't worry, they are in one of your distribution CDs. If you need to download Tcl/Tk you can check at <a href="tcl:Ayuda::InvokeBrowser http://tcl.activestate.com">The Tcl developer Xchange</a> <h3>cURL</h3> To do the actual downloading Getleft uses the program <a href="tcl:Ayuda::InvokeBrowser http://curl.haxx.se">cURL</a> by <a href="tcl:Ayuda::InvokeBrowser http://daniel.haxx.se">Daniel Stenberg</a>. There are compiled versions of cURL for several operating systems, which you will be able to download at <a href="tcl:Ayuda::InvokeBrowser http://curl.haxx.se">cURL's site</a> But usually, you won't need to download it, as it is included with most Linux distributions. <h3>Downloading Getleft</h3> You can check which is the last version of the program at <a href="tcl:Ayuda::InvokeBrowser http://personal1.iddeo.es/andresgarci/getleft/english/download.html">Getleft's home page</a> . In Linux you can choose the format of the package to download, there are 'rpm', 'deb' and 'tar.gz' packages available. If you choose 'rpm' or 'deb' you are likely to know what to do with them. For tarballs, you can install it in two ways: <ul> <li>For you own exclusive use in you home directory. <li>System wide install for everyone to use. </ul> In the first case, it is very simple, in fact if you have extracted the tarball in you home directory, you have already installed it. In the second case, it is not much harder, you can use the 'install.tcl' script to do all the hard work for you. The usage of the script is: ./install.tcl In a graphical enviroment, a wizard will appear to help you with the install. or in the console: ./install.tcl --prefix=/path ?--lang=LangCode? ?--proxy=proxyIP:proxyPort? Parameters: <ul> <li>prefix: It can be either '/usr' or '/usr/local', if you think other paths should be available, please let me know. This is the only required parameter. <li>lang: Code of the default language for Getleft, users will be able to overwrite it for their own use.
